Description: This paper discusses challenges of the use of open data and open source tools from the perspective of the German civilian research project ATTRIBUT. The subject of the projects research is the attribution of so-called stego-malware, a current trend in computer viruses and other malicious programs to infiltrate and exfiltrate information unnoticed by utilizing information hiding (also known as steganography) or to conceal command and control communication even in well-secured systems. In the context of this research effort, the project partners provide 14 large Open Data datasets as well as Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) as community contribution to various relevant research communities. Those include, among others, media & network forensics and incidence response as well as the information hiding communities.
