A bstract Postoperative respiratory complications are common following upper abdominal surgery due to impaired respiratory mechanics and reduced lung function. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of flow-oriented incentive spirometry (IS) combined with conventional chest physiotherapy in enhancing the pulmonary function and functional capacity after surgery. Materials and Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 56 patients who underwent upper abdominal surgery. Participants were divided into two groups: Group A received standard chest physiotherapy, while Group B received additional flow-oriented IS. Primary outcomes included forced expiratory volume in 1 s and forced expiratory volume in 6 s. Secondary outcomes included the visual analog scale for pain, chest expansion, and the 6-minute walk distance (6MWD). Assessments were conducted on postoperative day 1 (POD-1) and day 3 (POD-3). Results: Both groups showed significant improvements in all outcome measures between POD-1 and POD-3. However, Group B demonstrated a significantly greater improvement in walking capacity (6MWD) compared to Group A ( P = 0.001). No statistically significant differences were observed between groups for other measures. Conclusion: The addition of flow-oriented IS to conventional physiotherapy improves the postoperative functional capacity more effectively than physiotherapy alone, supporting its use in upper abdominal surgery rehabilitation. |
