Description: The Northern Apennines represent a hinge area between the Mediterranean and the continental Europe. The Northern Apennines were widely glaciated during the Last Glacial Maximum and glaciers experienced a poliphasic evolution during the Lateglacial until the end of the Pleistocene, foreseeing the Early Holocene. Glacier maximum positions and Lateglacial stages in Northern Apennines are here reconstructed and chronologically constrained. Geomorphological and glacial geological surveys combined with 10Be cosmogenic Surface Exposure Dating, for the first time applied in the region, lead to outline and define the entity and timing of the glaciation since the Last Glacial Maximum until the last Lateglacial stage. Glacier geometries are reconstructed adopting a quantitative approach. The combined use of photointerpretation, field surveys in selected sites and Geographic Information System (GIS) allow to obtaine quantitative data on glacier oulines and areal extensions, and to reconstruct past glacier surfaces and volumes. Reconstructed glaciers, together with geographic location, morphometric data and Equilibrium Line Altitudes, are organized in a GIS database built following the guidelines used in recently developed glacier inventories. 10Be exposure ages obtained from erratic boulders constrain the maximum positions reached by the glaciers before 20.4-19.1 ka, within the Marine Isotope Stage 2 and the global Last Glacial Maximum. At that time valley and mountain glaciers in Northern Apennines covered an area of 260 km2, with lowest ELAs reaching 1200-1250 m a.s.l. Since the end of the Last Glacial Maximum glaciers repeatedly re-advanced during the Lateglacial. A polyphasic Lateglacial evolution, expressed by at least three phases, is recorded by the northern Apenninic glaciers and correlated along the range by comparable rises of the Equilibrium Line Altitudes since the Last Glacial Maximum. The detected phases are constrained by a dataset of 10Be exposure ages and find high correlation with periodical ...
