Statin treatment prevents cardiovascular events to such an extent that mechanisms beyond lipid lowering are believed to provide a contribution. Blood pressure (BP) lowering may be one such mechanism but findings obtained to test this possibility have been controversial. Consecutive outpatients referred to for hypertension or coronary heart disease, previously never treated with statins and having a total cholesterol >200 mg/dl, were randomized to a 2 month-treatment course with statins (Stat, n=20, drug selection by clinic doctor: simvastatin or pravastatin, 10-20 mg/day; atorvastatin, 5-10 mg/day; cerivastatin, 0.2-0.4 mg/day) or to control (Ctrl, n=15, soja lecitine 20 g/day). Pre- and post-treatment measurements included serum total and HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides as well as clinic, 24-h, daytime (7am-24pm) and nighttime (24pm-7am) BP.
