| Description: |
The cement industry seeks to reduce its CO₂ emissions through supplementary cementitious materials, such as metakaolin. “flash” calcination emerges as a technology for its production, offering greater energy efficiency compared to conventional rotary kilns; however, its industrial adoption is limited by the lack of kinetic data for reactor design. The objective of this study was to experimentally determine the kinetic parameters of the dehydroxylation of a Brazilian kaolinitic clay in a pilot-scale “flash” calcination reactor. The methodology involved the calcination of the clay in an entrained flow tubular reactor under different gas flow rates, with monitoring of the temperature profile. The degree of conversion was evaluated by the loss on ignition technique, and the experimental data were fitted to an ideal mixed reactor model, considering a first-order reaction. The results indicated a degree of dehydroxylation in the range of 72 to 81% and allowed for the determination of an activation energy (Ea) of 43.96 kJ/mol and a pre-exponential factor (k₀) of 5475.3 s⁻¹. This activation energy value, considerably lower than that of high-purity kaolins, suggests favorable intrinsic characteristics of the local raw material for thermal activation. It is concluded that the kinetic model describes the process well, and the obtained parameters are crucial for designing and optimizing industrial reactors. This reinforces the viability of “flash” calcination of Brazilian clays, contributing to the decarbonization of the cement industry by replacing carbonate raw materials. |
