| Description: |
The books in our 1501 corpus find coherence not in their combined content, but in their use. They weave in and out of a Renaissance life following the logic of lived experience rather than that of knowledge systems. 1501 readers used schoolbooks when attending or teaching at a school; they interacted with medical literature when consulting a physician or taking steps to improve their health through diet and regimen; they read or sang lyric verse as young men and women caught up in asserting identities and developing emotional understanding; and so forth. In this conclusion, we follow the thread of a life lived amid books to fit together our fragmentary findings into a collage revealing–only partially, but vividly–the roles of music in everyday life in Italy c.1501. The picture that emerges is provisional and partial, pending the addition of our findings from the religious literature that will be presented in Volume 2. |
