| Description: |
This book presents the results of the project “Sounding the Bookshelf 1501: Music in a Year of Italian Printed Books” (2020-23), funded by the Leverhulme Trust and hosted at the University of Sheffield. The project asked a simple, if somewhat contrived, question: standing in an Italian bookshop towards the end of the year 1501, what information about music might you encounter as you browse the new printed titles available for purchase? Few of the books printed in Italy in 1501 contained notated music or specialist music theory; yet they present a cornucopia of musical knowledge, arising incidentally across every field of scholarship, literature and experience then in print. This Introduction presents the project, reviews its corpus of 1501 printed books, describes its methodology and key concepts, evaluates both the affordances and the challenges of the project as a means of documenting “everyday musical knowledge,” and sets out the structure of the book. |
