Venereal diseases, especially gonorrhea, have occupied the interest of the scientific community for many centuries. The first descriptions were placed in antiquity and end up in the modern era. Gonorrhea is one the most well-known sexually transmitted diseases and one of the most common. Although precautionary actions have been intensified, efforts to limit contagiousness are mentioned in ancient texts and papyri, with the main means of prevention being abstinence and maintenance of personal hygiene, alongside with therapeutic treatment of symptoms. However, the difficulty in discovering the etiology was a step back for its diagnosis and treatment, mainly due to the theory of unity with syphilis. Not only the actions of important scientists of the 19th and 20th centuries, but also the identification of pathogens through new laboratory methods, enhanced the clear distinction of those diseases and after the discovery of gonococcus by Albert Neisser, in 1879. However, an important priority was the relief of patients' symptoms, through various herbal preparations, ointments and solutions as well as invasive means and techniques. More specifically, two major approaches had been proposed for the treatment of gonorrhea, diversion therapy and antiseptic therapy, which divided the two major schools of medicine, French and German. Nevertheless, antibiotic treatment has been the main treatment of gonorrhea since 1937, with cephalosporins being chosen as the main modern therapeutic approach. Highlighting the importance of the disease, through complete recording of its diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, provides a more complete picture of the modern reality of gonorrhea. ; Τα αφροδίσια νοσήματα, και δη η γονόρροια, έχουν απασχολήσει την επιστημονική κοινότητα εδώ και πολλούς αιώνες.
