Description: The Earth BioGenome Project (EBP) marked significant progress in 2020, launching Phase I with a goal to sequence 1.84 million eukaryotes. The project faces major challenges in meeting Phase II and III objectives, which require the coordinated efforts of thousands of scientists and institutions worldwide to complete approximately 9,400 family reference genomes in three years. Despite financial constraints, the EBP's international network of over 5,000 dedicated scientists has positioned the project as the leading global initiative to sequence eukaryotic genomes. The project holds immense potential for advancing our understanding of evolution, enhancing ecosystem services in the face of climate change, and developing a sustainable bioeconomy. Its success is crucial for biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and future health, aligning with the urgency to address the global biodiversity crisis.
