Description: Background and purpose: The growing trend of population aging in the contemporary era has created significant challenges in the provision of medical and social services for the elderly. One of these issues is recurrent dental pain in the toothache among the elderly, which lacks clearly defined treatment and coping strategies. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of coping strategies in adaptation to dental pain among elderly individuals attending the Tooba Dental Clinic, Sari. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, 300 elderly patients aged 60 years and older who attended to Tooba Dental Clinic were selected through a census sampling method. Data collection was conducted using a demographic information form, a Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ) to assess pain coping strategies, and a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) to assess pain intensity. For correlation analysis, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was calculated, and differences between study variables based on demographic variables were examined using the Mann–Whitney U test and the Kruskal–Wallis test, Data were analyzed using SPSS V.22 software, and the significance level significance level of p < 0.05 was considered. Results: In this cross-sectional study, 300 elderly patients participated (19.7% were women, 80.3% were men). The results of the correlation test showed that there was an inverse and significant correlation between some pain coping strategies, including attention redirection, reinterpretation, self-talk, and ignoring and the VAS score in the elderly in the study (P0.05). Conclusion: The present study highlights the vital role of pain coping strategies in the management of dental pain among the elderly age. As dental care providers work to improve the quality of life of elderly patients, understanding individual coping strategies is essential for developing effective interventions.
