Like other pervasive expressions of state power - taxing, policing, conscripting - mass vaccination arouses anxiety in some people but sentiments of civic duty and shared solidarity in others. This collection of essays gives a comparative overview of vaccination at different times, in widely different places and under different types of political regime. Core themes in the chapters include immunisation as an element of state formation; citizens' articulation of seeing (or not seeing) their needs incorporated into public health practice; allegations that donors of development aid have too much influence on third-world health policies; and an ideological shift that regards vaccines more as profitable commodities than as essential tools of public health. Above all the essays suggest immunisation offers a novel lens through which to view changes in concepts of 'society' and 'nation' over time. lok: 42433289 3 exp: 42433289 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:45:51.438 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0101402840X 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 5 exp: 42433289 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-01-18 $t22:54:04.331 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014810485 208@/01 $a08-01-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 8 exp: 42433289 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:45:51.444 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014028418 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 10 exp: 42433289 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:45:51.449 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014028426 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 11 exp: 42433289 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-01-18 $t22:54:04.335 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014810493 208@/01 $a08-01-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 13 exp: 42433289 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-01-18 $t22:54:04.337 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014810507 208@/01 $a08-01-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 20 exp: 42433289 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:45:51.453 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014028434 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 21 exp: 42433289 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:45:51.457 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014028442 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 23 exp: 42433289 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:45:51.461 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014028450 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 24 exp: 42433289 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-01-18 $t22:54:04.340 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014810515 208@/01 $a08-01-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 25 exp: 42433289 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:45:51.466 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014028469 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 36 exp: 42433289 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-09-21 $t22:50:01.758 201C/01 $003-09-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01167431952 208@/01 $a03-09-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 51 exp: 42433289 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-01-18 $t22:54:04.353 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014810558 208@/01 $a08-01-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 59 exp: 42433289 59 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-01-18 $t22:54:04.359 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014810574 208@/01 $a08-01-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 75 exp: 42433289 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-01-18 $t22:54:04.365 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014810590 208@/01 $a08-01-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 107 exp: 42433289 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-05-20 $t17:20:03.801 201C/01 $029-05-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01108470297 208@/01 $a29-05-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 108 exp: 42433289 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-05-20 $t17:20:03.805 201C/01 $029-05-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01108470300 208@/01 $a29-05-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 204 exp: 42433289 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:45:51.471 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014028477 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH lok: 42433289 205 exp: 42433289 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:45:51.475 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014028485 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1wn0s1m $XH
