The rise and continuing success of populist parties is by now evident across Europe, despite persistent cross-national variations. Populist parties' electoral success and their participation in government have raised questions about their impact: not just on established party systems, but also on the systemic core of European democracies. In theory, this impact can be both beneficial for, as well as a challenge to democracy in general, and the tenets of liberal constitutional democracy in particular. The presence of populist parties has, in several cases, increased electoral turnout and public participation, which is generally seen as a positive effect when measuring the quality of democracy. However, populist parties' rise also points to negative effects. In addition to profoundly reshaping European party systems, they advocate what the populist Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán calls "illiberal democracy". lok: 44954819 3 exp: 44954819 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.179 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302768 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 5 exp: 44954819 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.187 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302776 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 8 exp: 44954819 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.194 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302784 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 10 exp: 44954819 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.202 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302792 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 11 exp: 44954819 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.210 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302806 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 20 exp: 44954819 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.217 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302814 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 21 exp: 44954819 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.224 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302822 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 23 exp: 44954819 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.231 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302830 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 24 exp: 44954819 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.237 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302849 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 25 exp: 44954819 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.245 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302857 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 36 exp: 44954819 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-05-25 $t02:34:23.791 201C/01 $029-05-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01304995526 208@/01 $a29-05-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 49 exp: 44954819 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.252 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302865 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 54 exp: 44954819 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.265 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302881 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 108 exp: 44954819 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.279 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302903 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 204 exp: 44954819 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.286 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142302911 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH lok: 44954819 205 exp: 44954819 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:36.293 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0114230292X 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62350 $XH
