047I    $aAbstract: Based on qualitative research, this paper investigates teachers’ conceptions of music theory, how they think about teaching the subject, and whether certain types can be distinguished in this regard. Three ideal types were identified. They differ, among other things, in which aspects of music theory they consider central: propositional knowledge about music theory or the connection to pieces of music, the connection to listening, and the connection to practice. If the first aspect is strongly emphasized, music theory tends to be decontextualized and thought of as an end in itself. If the latter aspects are emphasized, especially teachers at schools with a focus on music strongly relate the individual aspects of music theory to each other. Other teachers typically problematize the teaching of music theory. (DIPF/Orig.)
