These are not only based on the classic conflict of objectives between efficiency and justice, but also reflect the consequences of technical progress and the increasing internationalization of education systems. The reform discussion taking place in the Federal Republic of Germany follows a need for the "market for human capital" to adapt to the conditions of economic competition within and between highly developed industrial countries. With what aim and in what way should the education system be changed? Obviously, overall economic and institutional efficiency goals have a high priority. Possible ways to achieve this centrally touch on the issues of deregulation and financing. Against this background, it is the aim of this volume to take a new look at the educational economic role of the state at the levels of schools, the dual system, universities and further education in some current excerpts...
