A translation of the French biography of David Gans (1541-1613), a relatively little-studied pioneer of Jewish historiography and astronomy. Showing him in his Jewish intellectual and religious setting, and in his relation to Renaissance Prague where he lived, it is the first comprehensive study of his work and his intellectual environment, both in its Jewish aspect and with regard to the great spiritual revolutions of the sixteenth century.
