This study of the Soviet pact with Germany uses the documentary evidence made available from Soviet archives and that contained in the writings of Soviet historians, including the more recent contributions of the glasnost era to explain why Soviet Russia concluded a non- aggression treaty with Nazi Germany in 1939, to describe the circumstances in which that decision was taken and to analyze the consequences of that action for Soviet foreign policy in the period before 22 June 1941 (when Germany invaded Russia).
