Among the movements spawned by the upheavals in Eastern Europe in the past few years has been a resurgence of the Rusyn nationalists. There is some controversy about whether the people, spread though the Carpathian Mountains across five countries ever have, or could ever be, constructed as a separate nation. The movement is still small but growing rapidly especially among young intellectuals and artists. In the recently reconstructed Rusyn language, Magocsi outlined the history of the people in Slovakia since the settlement about 1200 CE in order to inform the Rusyns themselves; it was published by the Rusyn Renaissance Society in 1993.
