Born in Upper Silesia, the author was imprisoned before the war for the `crime' of being a Jew. He subsequently served in the British Army, was nearly captured in Dunkirk and ended the war as an interpreter at BAOR (British Army on the Rhine) Headquarters, helping to investigate war crimes.
