The "Yellow Peril" is a wide spread term and widely used stereotype. How did it emerge and how did it develope? During the first part of the 20th century postcards became the most important pictorial mass medium. A fair number of postcards deal with Japan regarded by the West as an exotic country with dainty people. But since Japan declared war on all major Western powers between 1900 and 1945 the postcards changed. The Japanese are portrayed as dainty, funny soldiers by nations not involved in the wars, as heroic fighters by their allies or as ruthless, barbaric "Yellows" by their enemies. The "Yellow Peril", a new term, had been created - presently used again in the context of China's role as an emerging world power. Book jacket.
