Karl Emil Franzos, the son of assimilated German-Jewish parents, was born in the Galician town of Chortkiv, went to school in Chernivitsi (Bukovina region) and studied law in Vienna and Graz. Although his life as a freelance writer and journalist took him on many journeys, particularly to Eastern Europe, he maintained a permanent home in Vienna until 1887; in that year he moved to Berlin, where he lived until his death in 1904. This outline, which initially appears to offer only a brief chronological and geographical sketch, also illustrates the inner conflicts of a life shaped by the struggle for acceptance, especially among the German middle classes; for Franzos spent his life caught between the contradictions of his self-perception as a German and others' perception of him as a Jew. His own Sonderweg in attempting to break through this tension and be recognised as an equal among equals' went beyond literature and thus also beyond his personal contribution to German culture."
