[Dt.:] Auf dieser Webseite findet sich eine Übersetzung der Fels- und Säulenedikte des Herrschers Ashoka aus der Maurya-Dynastie. Er regierte von ca. 268 v. Chr. bis 233 v. Chr. über ein Reich, das viele Gebiete des indischen Subkontinents umfasste. Bekannt wurde Ashoka durch seine Wandlung vom kriegerischen zum friedliebenden Herrscher und sein Bekenntnis zum Buddhismus. Mit den Edikten des Ashoka sollte zum einen sein Herrschaftsanspruch manifestiert und zum anderen der buddhistische Glaube verbreitet werden. - [Engl.:] The Edicts of Ashoka are a collection of 33 inscriptions on the Pillars of Ashoka, as well as boulders and cave walls, made by the Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan dynasty during his reign from c. 268 to 231 BCE. These inscriptions are dispersed throughout the areas of modern-day Pakistan and northern India, and represent the first tangible evidence of Buddhism. The edicts describe in detail the first wide expansion of Buddhism through the sponsorship of one of the most powerful kings of Indian history |
