Bis Anfang 1992 war das Fürstentum völlig unzugänglich, Fremde durften es bis auf wenige Ausnahmen nicht betreten. Die amerikanische Archäologin Susan S. Slusser rezensiert auf dieser Webseite die Ausstellung "Mustang: an exhibition of paintings and photographs in Nepal" im Pathan Museum in Kathmandu: in dieser werden Gemälde des australischen Künstlers und Architekten Robert Powell sowie Fotografien des amerikanischen Ethnographen und Fotojournalisten Thomas Laird gezeigt, die als eine der Ersten Mustang betreten und dokumentieren durften. - [Engl.:] Politically Mustang is part of the Kingdom of Nepal. Because of its remoteness from Kathmandu, the capital, Mustang, together with a twenty-mile wide strip of northern Nepal, was closed to foreigners for many years. Although over time the border restrictions have been gradually relaxed permitting unfettered access to areas tantalizingly out-of-bounds in the sixties and seventies, Mustang itself long continued to remain off limits except to a handful of outsiders. Mary S. Slusser reviews "Mustang: An Exhibition of Paintings and Photographs in Nepal" an exhibition which was shown in the Pathan Museum in Kathmandu, where documents of two of the first Westerners that entered Mustang were shown: paintings of the Australian artist and architect Robert Powell and photographs of the American ethnographer and journalist Thomas Laid.
