In early modern times universities had their main feature in the collection, systematization and diffusion of religious confessional knowledge. Especially the newly founded university of Wittenberg was of great influence from the beginning of the 16th to the 17th centuries. Not only the fountainheads of the reformation but also their successors in the second, third and even later generations attracted a large number of students from Europe. Thus Leucorea became the focus of protestant intellectual life in Mid-Europe. Its great influence was not only due to the theologians but also to representatives of any other faculty. Commemorating the 450th return of Melanchthon's death (2010) researchers from many different disciplines and nations assembled in Wittenberg to analyze the worldwide impact of the Reformation in 20 contributions.
