This highly provocative study reveals that most exiles were on British soil by chance rather than by design, and many were not sure whether to stay. Overlooked by historians, who have concentrated on the 'Free French' of de Gaulle, these were the 'Forgotten French': refugees swept off the beaches of Dunkirk; servicemen held in camps after the Franco-German armistice; Vichy consular officials left to cater for their compatriots; and a sizeable colonist community based mainly in London. Drawing on little-known archival sources, this study examines the hopes and fears of these communities who were bitterly divided among themselves, some being attracted to Pétain as much as to de Gaulle. It also looks at how they fitted into British life and how the British in turn responded. The author finds that while the public was often charitable, the Government was suspicious of their loyalties and even considered general internment. Illustrated throughout, this is essential reading for anyone interested in the British and French experiences of the Second World War. lok: 36240891 3 exp: 36240891 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.830 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757441025 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 5 exp: 36240891 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.833 201C/01 $004-03-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01184538522 208@/01 $a04-03-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 8 exp: 36240891 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.836 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757441033 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 10 exp: 36240891 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.839 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757441041 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 11 exp: 36240891 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.843 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758055560 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 13 exp: 36240891 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.847 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758055579 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 21 exp: 36240891 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.850 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758055587 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 23 exp: 36240891 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.857 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757441068 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 24 exp: 36240891 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.862 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758055595 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 25 exp: 36240891 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.866 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757441076 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 36 exp: 36240891 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.880 201C/01 $004-03-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01185105476 208@/01 $a04-03-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 51 exp: 36240891 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.943 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758055625 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 74 exp: 36240891 74 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.985 201C/01 $009-10-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01276947178 208@/01 $a09-10-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 75 exp: 36240891 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:30.995 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758055641 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 107 exp: 36240891 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:31.001 201C/01 $003-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01091923760 208@/01 $a03-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 204 exp: 36240891 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:31.005 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757441084 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR lok: 36240891 205 exp: 36240891 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:15:31.008 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757441092 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35012 $XR
