It innovatively brings together the interests of historians in nineteenth-century witchcraft and the twentieth-century fieldwork of anthropologists and sociologists on the continued relevance of witch beliefs. The book covers England, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Finland, Transylvania and Northern Ireland. It examines the experience of and attitudes towards witchcraft from both above and below. They demonstrate the widespread fear of witches amongst the masses during the nineteenth century, and the continued but more restricted relevance of witchcraft in the twentieth century. While the educated classes generally denounced witch-believers as either superstitious, foolish or both, secular and religious authorities still had to find strategies of dealing with the demands of those who believed themselves the victims of witchcraft. Moreover the rise of the folklore movement and the growth of anthropology as an academic discipline over the period provided a huge body of evidence on continuing beliefs that many had consigned to the past. This book will be essential reading for those interested in the continued importance of witchcraft and magic in the modern era. More generally it will appeal to those with a lively interest in the cultural history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. lok: 36240915 3 exp: 36240915 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.827 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757442943 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 5 exp: 36240915 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.831 201C/01 $004-03-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01184508127 208@/01 $a04-03-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 8 exp: 36240915 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.835 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757442951 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 10 exp: 36240915 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.838 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $075744296X 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 11 exp: 36240915 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.844 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758050992 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 13 exp: 36240915 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.847 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $075805100X 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 21 exp: 36240915 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.849 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758051018 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 23 exp: 36240915 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.852 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757442986 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 24 exp: 36240915 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.864 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758051026 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 25 exp: 36240915 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.882 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757442994 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 36 exp: 36240915 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.893 201C/01 $004-03-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01185100857 208@/01 $a04-03-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 51 exp: 36240915 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.939 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758051050 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 54 exp: 36240915 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.948 201C/01 $003-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01091924325 208@/01 $a03-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 74 exp: 36240915 74 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.981 201C/01 $008-10-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01276900791 208@/01 $a08-10-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 75 exp: 36240915 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.994 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758051077 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 107 exp: 36240915 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.996 201C/01 $003-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01091924333 208@/01 $a03-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 204 exp: 36240915 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:51.999 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757443001 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR lok: 36240915 205 exp: 36240915 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:12:52.003 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $075744301X 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34985 $XR
