The existence of such differences was first noted in 1789 by Thomas Malthus when he contrasted the low pressure European regimes with the high pressure regimes found in the less civilized parts of the world, most notably China and Japan. This contrast, long taken as fundamental by historical demographers, has recently been challenged by authors who argue that it should be discarded as Malthusian mythology. The papers included here evaluate the received and revisionist views by comparing reproduction in a high pressure regime - Taiwan during the Japanese occupation - and a low pressure regime - the Netherlands in the years 1830-1920. The papers examine the impact of infant mortality, social class, ethnic identity, illegitimacy, form of marriage, and rural vs. urban settings. Reality or mythology?, that is the question. lok: 36241022 3 exp: 36241022 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.605 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757451500 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 5 exp: 36241022 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.608 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758041101 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 8 exp: 36241022 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.611 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757451519 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 10 exp: 36241022 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.613 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757451527 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 11 exp: 36241022 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.616 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $075804111X 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 13 exp: 36241022 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.618 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758041128 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 20 exp: 36241022 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.621 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757451535 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 21 exp: 36241022 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.624 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758041136 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 23 exp: 36241022 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.626 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757451543 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 24 exp: 36241022 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.630 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758041144 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 25 exp: 36241022 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.632 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757451551 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 36 exp: 36241022 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.635 201C/01 $023-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01214381111 208@/01 $a23-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 49 exp: 36241022 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.638 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758041160 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 51 exp: 36241022 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.640 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758041187 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 54 exp: 36241022 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.646 201C/01 $003-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01091924872 208@/01 $a03-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 69 exp: 36241022 69 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.656 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758041209 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 74 exp: 36241022 74 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.659 201C/01 $009-10-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01276947011 208@/01 $a09-10-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 75 exp: 36241022 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.661 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0758041217 208@/01 $a06-08-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 76 exp: 36241022 76 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.664 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0787047139 208@/01 $a05-11-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 107 exp: 36241022 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.667 201C/01 $003-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01091924880 208@/01 $a03-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 108 exp: 36241022 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.670 201C/01 $003-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01091924899 208@/01 $a03-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 204 exp: 36241022 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.673 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $075745156X 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR lok: 36241022 205 exp: 36241022 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-06-25 $t23:47:42.676 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0757451578 208@/01 $a24-07-15 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34833 $XR
