It would be impossible to gain a complete understanding of the American system of government without an appreciation of the nature and workings of this essential body. This is an introductory text aimed at undergraduates studying American politics and American society. It looks at the workings of the United States Congress, and uses the Republican period of ascendancy, which lasted from 1994 until 2000, as an example of how the Congress works in practice. The book illustrates the basic principles of Congress using contemporary and recent examples, while also drawing attention to the changes that took place in the 1990s. The period of Republican control is absent from many of the standard texts and is of considerable academic interest for a number of reasons, not least the 1994 election, the budget deadlock in 1995 and the Clinton impeachment scandal of 1999. The book traces the origin and development of the United States Congress, before looking in depth at the role of representatives and senators, the committee system, parties in Congress, and the relationship between Congress and the President, the media and interest groups. This will be the first textbook on the market that enables students to incorporate these developments into their work and into their thinking about contemporary American politics and society. lok: 37860948 3 exp: 37860948 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.603 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772015805 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 5 exp: 37860948 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.609 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772015813 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 8 exp: 37860948 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.614 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772015821 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 10 exp: 37860948 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.620 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $077201583X 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 11 exp: 37860948 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.625 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772015848 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 20 exp: 37860948 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.630 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772015864 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 21 exp: 37860948 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.636 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772015872 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 23 exp: 37860948 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.642 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772015880 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 24 exp: 37860948 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.647 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772015899 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 25 exp: 37860948 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.652 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772015902 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 36 exp: 37860948 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.702 201C/01 $014-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0117683729X 208@/01 $a14-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 49 exp: 37860948 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.657 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102260177 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 54 exp: 37860948 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.668 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102260185 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 107 exp: 37860948 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.679 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102260193 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 108 exp: 37860948 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.685 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102260207 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 204 exp: 37860948 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.691 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772015945 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH lok: 37860948 205 exp: 37860948 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:09.696 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772015953 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38193 $XH
