Starting with the realities of abuse rather than the liberal architecture of rights, it casts human rights as a language for probing the political dimensions of suffering. Seen in this context, the predominant Western models of rights generate a substantial but also problematic and not always emancipatory array of practices. These models are far from answering the questions about the nature of political community that are raised by the systemic infliction of suffering. Rather than a simple message from 'us' to 'them', then, rights promotion is a long and difficult conversation about the relationship between political organisations and suffering. Three case studies are explored - the Tiananmen Square massacre, East Timor's violent modern history and the circumstances of indigenous Australians. The purpose of these discussions is not to elaborate on a new theory of rights, but to work towards rights practices that are more responsive to the spectrum of injury that we inflict and endure. The book is a valuable and innovative contribution to rights debates for students of international politics, political theory, and conflict resolution, as well as for those engaged in the pursuit of human rights. lok: 37860967 3 101B $030-01-17 $t15:29:57.000 101C $030-01-17 101U $0utf8 145S/01 $a007 exp: 37860967 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.477 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772018847 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 5 exp: 37860967 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.480 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772018855 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 8 exp: 37860967 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.484 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772018863 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 10 exp: 37860967 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.488 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772018871 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 11 exp: 37860967 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.492 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $077201888X 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 20 exp: 37860967 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.495 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772018901 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 21 exp: 37860967 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.499 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $077201891X 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 23 exp: 37860967 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.503 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772018928 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 24 exp: 37860967 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.507 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772018936 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 25 exp: 37860967 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.510 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772018944 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 36 exp: 37860967 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.544 201C/01 $014-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176839152 208@/01 $a14-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 49 exp: 37860967 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.514 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102260932 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 54 exp: 37860967 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.522 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102260940 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 107 exp: 37860967 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.529 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102260959 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 108 exp: 37860967 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.533 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102260967 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 204 exp: 37860967 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.537 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772018987 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH lok: 37860967 205 exp: 37860967 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:48.541 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772018995 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28411 $XH
