The opening chapter provides a conceptual framework both for this book and for its companion volume on the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Subsequent chapters provide a rounded view of trials conducted according to different procedures within contrasting legal systems, including English common law and Roman canon law. They consider the judges and juries and the amateur and professional advisers involved in legal processes as well as the offenders brought before the courts, with the reasons for prosecuting them and the defences they put forward. The cases examined range from a fourteenth century cause-célèbre, the attempted trial of Pope Boniface VIII for heresy, to investigations of obscure people for sexual and religious offences in the city states of Geneva and Venice. Technical terms have been cut to a minimum to ensure accessibility and appeal to lawyers, social, political and legal historians, undergraduate and postgraduates as well as general readers interested in the development of the trial through time. Domestic and international trials, 1700-2000: The trial in history, vol. II edited by Dr Rose Melikan, is also published by Manchester University Press. lok: 37860970 3 exp: 37860970 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.775 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772019320 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 5 exp: 37860970 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.782 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772019339 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 8 exp: 37860970 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.788 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772019347 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 10 exp: 37860970 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.794 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772019355 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 11 exp: 37860970 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.800 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772019363 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 20 exp: 37860970 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.805 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $077201938X 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 21 exp: 37860970 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.811 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772019398 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 23 exp: 37860970 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.817 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772019401 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 24 exp: 37860970 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.823 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $077201941X 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 25 exp: 37860970 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.827 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772019428 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 36 exp: 37860970 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.875 201C/01 $014-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176837176 208@/01 $a14-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 49 exp: 37860970 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.832 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102261068 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 54 exp: 37860970 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.843 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102261076 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 107 exp: 37860970 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.853 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102261084 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 108 exp: 37860970 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.859 201C/01 $024-04-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01102261092 208@/01 $a24-04-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 204 exp: 37860970 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.864 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772019460 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH lok: 37860970 205 exp: 37860970 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-01-22 $t22:44:07.869 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0772019479 208@/01 $a26-04-16 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/38601 $XH
