Some twenty years later, he embarked on a collaboration with Benjamin Britten and Eric Crozier, adapting Melville’s novella for the opera stage. The libretto they produced poignantly reaffirms the Forsterian creed of salvation through personal relationships. This study presents an extensive exploration of Forster’s involvement in the interpretation, transformation and re-creation of Melville’s text. It situates the story of the Handsome Sailor in the wider context of Forster’s literary oeuvre, his life, and his life writings. In detailed readings, Billy Budd becomes a lens through which the themes, patterns and leitmotifs of Forsterian thought and creative imagination are brought into focus. A close re-examination of the libretto sketches serves to shed new light on the collaborative process in which Melville’s story was changed to fit an archetypal array of plot and character types that is central to Forster’s own storytelling. lok: 40031289 3 exp: 40031289 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.313 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0802656633 208@/01 $a11-03-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 5 exp: 40031289 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.354 201C/01 $025-02-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01183451369 208@/01 $a25-02-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 8 exp: 40031289 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.364 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0802656641 208@/01 $a11-03-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 10 exp: 40031289 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.369 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $080265665X 208@/01 $a11-03-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 11 exp: 40031289 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.373 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01001886992 208@/01 $a24-06-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 13 exp: 40031289 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.377 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0100188700X 208@/01 $a24-06-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 21 exp: 40031289 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.384 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01001599802 208@/01 $a23-06-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 23 exp: 40031289 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.396 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0802656676 208@/01 $a11-03-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 24 exp: 40031289 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.399 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01001887018 208@/01 $a24-06-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 25 exp: 40031289 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.408 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0802656684 208@/01 $a11-03-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 51 exp: 40031289 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.411 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01001887034 208@/01 $a24-06-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 76 exp: 40031289 76 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.919 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01001887050 208@/01 $a24-06-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 77 exp: 40031289 77 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.923 201C/01 $002-03-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01183955553 208@/01 $a02-03-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 107 exp: 40031289 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.928 201C/01 $008-05-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01105164616 208@/01 $a08-05-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 204 exp: 40031289 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.937 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0802656692 208@/01 $a11-03-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR lok: 40031289 205 exp: 40031289 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t01:40:22.949 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0802656706 208@/01 $a11-03-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32563 $XR
