The emergence of "Westernized" music from China -concurrent with the technological advances that have made global culture widely accessible - has not established a prominent presence in the West. China and the West brings together essays on centuries of Sino-Western musical exchange by musicologists, ethnomusicologists, and music theorists from around the world. It opens with a look at theoretical approaches of prior studies of musical encounters and a comprehensive survey of the intercultural and cross-cultural theoretical frameworks-exoticism, orientalism, globalization, transculturation, and hybridization-that inform these essays. Part I focuses on the actual encounters between Chinese and European musicians, their instruments and institutions, and the compositions inspired by these encounters, while Part II examines theatricalized and mediated East-West cultural exchanges, which often drew on stereotypical tropes, resulting in performances more inventive than accurate. Part III looks at the musical language, sonority, and subject matters of "intercultural" compositions by Eastern and Western composers. Essays in Part IV address reception studies and consider the ways in which differences are articulated in musical discourse by actors serving different purposes, whether self-promotion, commercial marketing, or modes of nationalistic-even propagandistic-expression. lok: 41649485 3 exp: 41649485 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $013-09-17 $t00:04:53.201 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007368187 208@/01 $a12-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 5 exp: 41649485 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-22 $t18:12:04.235 201C/01 $018-02-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01182880118 208@/01 $a18-02-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 8 exp: 41649485 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $013-09-17 $t00:04:53.207 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007368195 208@/01 $a12-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 10 exp: 41649485 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $013-09-17 $t00:04:53.212 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007368209 208@/01 $a12-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 11 exp: 41649485 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-09-17 $t00:04:09.874 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007402121 208@/01 $a13-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 13 exp: 41649485 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-09-17 $t00:04:09.877 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0100740213X 208@/01 $a13-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 21 exp: 41649485 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $013-09-17 $t00:04:53.221 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007368225 208@/01 $a12-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 23 exp: 41649485 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $013-09-17 $t00:04:53.226 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007368233 208@/01 $a12-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 24 exp: 41649485 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-09-17 $t00:04:09.880 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007402148 208@/01 $a13-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 25 exp: 41649485 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $013-09-17 $t00:04:53.230 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007368241 208@/01 $a12-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 36 exp: 41649485 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-22 $t23:00:14.657 201C/01 $018-02-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01183148704 208@/01 $a18-02-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 51 exp: 41649485 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-09-17 $t00:04:09.890 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007402180 208@/01 $a13-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 74 exp: 41649485 74 1 #EPN 201B/01 $012-10-24 $t00:32:43.018 201C/01 $011-10-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01277281580 208@/01 $a11-10-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 75 exp: 41649485 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-09-17 $t00:04:09.896 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007402202 208@/01 $a13-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 76 exp: 41649485 76 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-09-17 $t00:04:09.899 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007402210 208@/01 $a13-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 77 exp: 41649485 77 1 #EPN 201B/01 $001-03-22 $t22:55:04.979 201C/01 $001-03-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01183855001 208@/01 $a01-03-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 107 exp: 41649485 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $022-05-20 $t16:50:59.241 201C/01 $022-05-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01107613574 208@/01 $a22-05-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 204 exp: 41649485 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $013-09-17 $t00:04:53.237 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0100736825X 208@/01 $a12-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH lok: 41649485 205 exp: 41649485 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $013-09-17 $t00:04:53.241 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01007368268 208@/01 $a12-09-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1qv5n9n $XH
