Janet Wolff’s fascinating volume is a family history – but one that is digressive and consistently surprising. The central underlying and repeated themes of the book are exile and displacement; lives (and deaths) during the Third Reich; mother-daughter and sibling relationships; the generational transmission of trauma and experience; transatlantic reflections; and the struggle for creative expression. Stories mobilised, and people encountered, in the course of the narrative include: the internment of aliens in Britain during the Second World War; cultural life in Rochester, New York, in the 1920s; the social and personal meanings of colour(s); the industrialist and philanthropist, Henry Simon of Manchester, including his relationship with the Norwegian explorer, Fridtjof Nansen; the liberal British campaigner and MP of the 1940s, Eleanor Rathbone; reflections on the lives and images of spinsters. The text is supplemented and interrupted throughout by images (photographs, paintings, facsimile documents), some of which serve to illustrate the story, others engaging indirectly with the written word."... lok: 42142853 3 exp: 42142853 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.185 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01011907364 208@/01 $a22-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 5 exp: 42142853 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.196 201C/01 $011-02-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01182568777 208@/01 $a11-02-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 8 exp: 42142853 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.205 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01011907372 208@/01 $a22-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 10 exp: 42142853 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.208 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01011907380 208@/01 $a22-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 11 exp: 42142853 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.212 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01012035638 208@/01 $a24-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 13 exp: 42142853 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.224 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01012035646 208@/01 $a24-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 21 exp: 42142853 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.230 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01011907402 208@/01 $a22-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 23 exp: 42142853 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.241 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01011907410 208@/01 $a22-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 24 exp: 42142853 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.244 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01012035654 208@/01 $a24-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 25 exp: 42142853 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.246 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01011907429 208@/01 $a22-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 36 exp: 42142853 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.249 201C/01 $003-09-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01167431944 208@/01 $a03-09-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 51 exp: 42142853 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.332 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01012035689 208@/01 $a24-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 59 exp: 42142853 59 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.386 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01012035700 208@/01 $a24-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 74 exp: 42142853 74 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.390 201C/01 $011-10-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01277280371 208@/01 $a11-10-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 75 exp: 42142853 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.392 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01012035719 208@/01 $a24-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 107 exp: 42142853 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.396 201C/01 $029-05-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01108412297 208@/01 $a29-05-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 204 exp: 42142853 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.398 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01011907437 208@/01 $a22-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR lok: 42142853 205 exp: 42142853 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-06-25 $t02:33:55.407 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01011907445 208@/01 $a22-11-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/31449 $XR
