Anybody interested in politics or economics spent most of their time in Jakarta, where the action was. Our view of the world's fourth largest country threatened to become simplistic, lacking that essential graininess. Then, in 1998, Indonesia was plunged into a crisis that could not be understood with simplistic tools. After 32 years of enforced stability, the New Order was at an end. Things began to happen in-the provinces that no one was prepared for. Democratization was one, decentralization another. Ethnic and religious identities emerged that had lain buried under the blanket of the New Order's modernizing ideology. Unfamiliar, sometimes violent forms of political competition and of rentseeking came to light. Decentralization was often connected with the neo-liberal desire to reduce state powers and make room for free trade and democracy. To what extent were the goals of good governance and a stronger civil society achieved? How much of the process was 'captured' by regional elites to increase their own powers? Amidst the new identity politics, what has happened to citizenship? These are among the central questions addressed in this book. This volume is the result of a two-year research project at KITLV. It brings together an international group of 24 scholars-mainly from Indonesia and the Netherlands but also from the United States, Australia, Germany, Canada and Portugal"--Publisher's description. lok: 42432211 3 exp: 42432211 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:44:12.878 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01013930681 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 5 exp: 42432211 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-01-18 $t23:06:28.532 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014925517 208@/01 $a10-01-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 8 exp: 42432211 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:44:12.882 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0101393069X 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 10 exp: 42432211 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:44:12.884 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01013930703 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 11 exp: 42432211 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-01-18 $t23:06:28.536 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014925525 208@/01 $a10-01-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 20 exp: 42432211 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:44:12.888 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01013930711 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 21 exp: 42432211 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:44:12.890 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0101393072X 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 23 exp: 42432211 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:44:12.893 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01013930738 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 24 exp: 42432211 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-01-18 $t23:06:28.541 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01014925533 208@/01 $a10-01-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 25 exp: 42432211 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:44:12.896 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01013930746 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 36 exp: 42432211 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $001-10-22 $t22:54:44.019 201C/01 $001-10-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01214974961 208@/01 $a01-10-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 49 exp: 42432211 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-05-20 $t17:19:49.568 201C/01 $029-05-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01108466729 208@/01 $a29-05-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 54 exp: 42432211 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-05-20 $t17:19:49.571 201C/01 $029-05-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01108466737 208@/01 $a29-05-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 107 exp: 42432211 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-05-20 $t17:19:49.573 201C/01 $029-05-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01108466745 208@/01 $a29-05-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 108 exp: 42432211 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-05-20 $t17:19:49.576 201C/01 $029-05-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01108466753 208@/01 $a29-05-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 204 exp: 42432211 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:44:12.899 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01013930754 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH lok: 42432211 205 exp: 42432211 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-12-17 $t22:44:12.902 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01013930762 208@/01 $a29-12-17 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76x39 $XH
