Ulrich vom Hagen widmet sich der spezifischen Kultur des Militärs: In Verbindung der Weber'schen Herrschaftstheorie und der Bourdieu'schen Feldtheorie konzipiert er das Militär als gewaltsame Körperschaft und lässt den Homo militaris dabei als soziologische Figur - als eine Gestalt institutionalisierter Gewalt - sichtbar werden. Zur Untersuchung des militärischen Feldes Deutschlands konnten hierfür erstmals Daten einer internen Erhebung der Bundeswehr genutzt werden. Das Buch macht eine kritische Militärsoziologie an die allgemeine Soziologie anschlussfähig.
