Why U.S. Big Foundations invested in European science and scientific infrastructure during the 1920s
Against the background of military, political and economic supremacy of the U.S. after the Great War, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace began investing in European science and academic infrastructures. As they promoted modern scientific knowledge to further postwar European reconstruction, Scientific Philanthropy became a transatlantic key moment of strategic political intervention. From the outset, their agenda went far beyond mere academic networking. First, while Republican U.S. government policies kept aloof from internationalist committments, the Philanthropists ventured to experiment with an internationalist alternative. Academic entanglement became their tool for approaching the cloud of international experts in the environs of the newly established League of Nations. Second, Philanthropists persued their innermost goals of interfering in contemporary European academic knowledge orders. They left an imprint by financing prestigious reconstruction work such as the rebuilding of the Louvain Library in Belgium. Moreover they focused on supporting carefully selected disciplinary fields of knowledge with a distinct focus: Carnegie representatives concentrated on international law while Rockefeller officers leant towards funding what was rated as political science expertise with the prospect of stabilizing especially the postwar German Republic. Ultimately, Philanthropy was not of one piece nor were smooth processes of American knowledge exports to Europe guaranteed. It rather turned out to materialize as an experimental series of transnational intellectual cooperations with debatable half-lifes lok: 43481022 3 exp: 43481022 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.875 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01026002370 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 5 exp: 43481022 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.894 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01026002389 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 8 exp: 43481022 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.898 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01026002397 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 10 exp: 43481022 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.902 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01026002400 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 11 exp: 43481022 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.906 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01026002419 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 20 exp: 43481022 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.910 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01026002427 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 21 exp: 43481022 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.914 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01026002435 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 23 exp: 43481022 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.917 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01026002443 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 24 exp: 43481022 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.922 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01026002451 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 25 exp: 43481022 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.925 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0102600246X 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 36 exp: 43481022 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-05-25 $t02:42:32.852 201C/01 $029-05-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01304998312 208@/01 $a29-05-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 49 exp: 43481022 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $005-06-20 $t16:21:45.209 201C/01 $005-06-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01110598505 208@/01 $a05-06-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 54 exp: 43481022 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $005-06-20 $t16:21:45.212 201C/01 $005-06-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01110598513 208@/01 $a05-06-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 108 exp: 43481022 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $005-06-20 $t16:21:45.215 201C/01 $005-06-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01110598521 208@/01 $a05-06-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 204 exp: 43481022 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.940 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01026002508 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH lok: 43481022 205 exp: 43481022 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-08-18 $t22:54:59.944 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01026002516 208@/01 $a10-08-18 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/15156 $XH
