In this paper, we introduce a supervised approach for the delineation of urban areas using commonly available topographic data and commercial GIS software. The method uses a supervised parameter optimization approach along with buffer-based quality measuring method. The approach was developed, tested and evaluated in terms of possible usage in monitoring built-up areas in spatial science at a very fine-grained level. Results show that built-up area boundaries can be delineated automatically with higher quality compared to the settlement boundaries actually used. The approach has been applied to 166 settlement bodies in Germany. The study shows a very efficient way of extracting settlement boundaries from topographic data and maps and contributes to the quantification and monitoring of urban sprawl. Moreover, the findings from this study can potentially guide policy makers a lok: 44945903 3 exp: 44945903 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.644 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529576 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 5 exp: 44945903 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-22 $t18:16:05.616 201C/01 $018-02-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01182913237 208@/01 $a18-02-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 8 exp: 44945903 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.666 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529584 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 10 exp: 44945903 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.675 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529592 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 11 exp: 44945903 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.686 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529606 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 13 exp: 44945903 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.695 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529614 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 20 exp: 44945903 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.704 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529622 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 21 exp: 44945903 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.712 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529630 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 23 exp: 44945903 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.722 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529649 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 24 exp: 44945903 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.729 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529657 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 25 exp: 44945903 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.736 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529665 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 36 exp: 44945903 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.742 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529673 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 50 exp: 44945903 50 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.749 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529681 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 54 exp: 44945903 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.755 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0114252969X 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 71 exp: 44945903 71 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.764 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529703 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 75 exp: 44945903 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.773 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529711 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 107 exp: 44945903 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.780 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0114252972X 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 204 exp: 44945903 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.786 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529738 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH lok: 44945903 205 exp: 44945903 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:17:41.793 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142529746 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/59046 $XH
