However, Tunisia is the only country in which the transformation process resulted in a democratic political system with constitutional rights and free elections, achievements that remain to this day. This paper investigates the importance and role of civil society during the transformation process in Tunisia. Theoretically, this paper integrates a participative framework of civil society with a three-stage-model of democratic transformation, inspired by French philosopher Montesquieu. In the descriptive empirical section, events are summarized that took place between 2000 and 2017. In the subsequent sections, the paper frames events from this period in a historical and sociological context: from the Ottomans until the authoritarian ruler Ben Ali, thereby drawing special attention to the unique evolution o lok: 44947852 3 exp: 44947852 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.509 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715402 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 5 exp: 44947852 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.515 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715410 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 8 exp: 44947852 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.522 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715429 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 10 exp: 44947852 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.527 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715437 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 11 exp: 44947852 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.534 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715445 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 20 exp: 44947852 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.539 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715453 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 21 exp: 44947852 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.545 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715461 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 23 exp: 44947852 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.552 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0115271547X 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 24 exp: 44947852 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.557 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715488 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 25 exp: 44947852 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.567 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715496 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 36 exp: 44947852 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-05-25 $t02:13:54.077 201C/01 $029-05-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01304990265 208@/01 $a29-05-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 49 exp: 44947852 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.574 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0115271550X 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 54 exp: 44947852 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.586 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715526 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 108 exp: 44947852 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.599 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715542 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 204 exp: 44947852 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.604 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715550 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH lok: 44947852 205 exp: 44947852 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-05-21 $t23:44:12.610 201C/01 $010-05-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01152715569 208@/01 $a10-05-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/60085 $XH
