Drawing on a poststructuralist, discourse-theoretical framework, I argue that the discourse uses foreign policy and world order as sites for the (re-)production of India's identity by placing India into a system of differences that constitutes 'what India is'. The article shows that India's foreign policy discourse frames world order in accordance with India's own national experiences and thus seeks to upheave India's identity to a position from where it can represent the universal: a global political community. This notion of Indian Exceptionalism constitutes the affective dimension of the discourse that obscures the absence of an extra-discursive foundation on which national identities could be grounded by endowing the Self with an imaginary essence and seemingly unique qualities lok: 44954705 3 exp: 44954705 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.128 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031748 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 5 exp: 44954705 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.134 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031756 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 8 exp: 44954705 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.139 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031764 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 10 exp: 44954705 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.144 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031772 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 11 exp: 44954705 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.149 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031780 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 20 exp: 44954705 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.155 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031799 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 21 exp: 44954705 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.160 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031802 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 23 exp: 44954705 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.165 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031810 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 24 exp: 44954705 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.170 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031829 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 25 exp: 44954705 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.176 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031837 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 36 exp: 44954705 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $026-05-25 $t02:27:18.125 201C/01 $026-05-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0130488774X 208@/01 $a26-05-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 49 exp: 44954705 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.181 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031845 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 54 exp: 44954705 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.192 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031861 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 108 exp: 44954705 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.203 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031888 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 204 exp: 44954705 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.209 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142031896 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH lok: 44954705 205 exp: 44954705 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:09:03.214 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0114203190X 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62205 $XH
