Extant research shows that populist parties are increasingly successful, and that populist messages appear more frequently in the media. This raises the question to what extent populist messages affect public opinion. The aim of this study is to assess whether populist messages fuel political cynicism by arguing that an arrogant, selfish and complacent political elite does not listen to what ordinary people find important. Moreover, it assesses whether populist messages affect only those already favourably predisposed towards populist parties, or whether it affects citizens across the board. The results of a survey experiment, conducted in the Netherlands, suggests that individuals who are exposed to populist messages are indeed more cynical afterwards than individuals who are exposed to a very similar, but more 'neutrally formulated' message. However, the effects seem to be restricted to supporters of populist lok: 44956098 3 exp: 44956098 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.485 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298396 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 5 exp: 44956098 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.493 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0114229840X 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 8 exp: 44956098 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.500 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298418 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 10 exp: 44956098 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.507 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298426 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 11 exp: 44956098 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.515 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298434 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 20 exp: 44956098 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.521 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298442 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 21 exp: 44956098 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.530 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298450 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 23 exp: 44956098 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.536 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298469 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 24 exp: 44956098 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.545 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298477 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 25 exp: 44956098 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.556 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298485 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 36 exp: 44956098 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-05-25 $t02:34:13.891 201C/01 $029-05-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01304995437 208@/01 $a29-05-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 49 exp: 44956098 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.566 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298493 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 54 exp: 44956098 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.583 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298515 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 108 exp: 44956098 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.597 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298531 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 204 exp: 44956098 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.605 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0114229854X 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH lok: 44956098 205 exp: 44956098 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:31.612 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142298558 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62477 $XH
