Facebook groups like the Social Sanction group, tellingly abbreviated as SS, and the Rubbish Collector Organization, which was founded in 2014 and has attracted more than 200,000 members, have played a crucial role in the process of political radicalization. The aim of these groups is to expose political opponents by accusing them of lèse-majesté, which can result in a prison sentence of 15 years or more. The groups also serve as fora for hate speech and are increasingly used as a tool of mobilization for state-sponsored mass events by the authoritarian regime that came to power with the coup d’état of May 2014. Contrary to its popular perception as a tool for democratization, Facebook has been successfully used by political groups reminiscent of fascist vigilante groups. This paper analyses the genesis of these groups and discusses the phenomenon in a broader political and historical cont lok: 45157731 3 exp: 45157731 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.423 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445119 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 5 exp: 45157731 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.432 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445127 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 8 exp: 45157731 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.439 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445135 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 10 exp: 45157731 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.444 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445143 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 11 exp: 45157731 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.450 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445151 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 20 exp: 45157731 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.456 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0114244516X 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 21 exp: 45157731 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.463 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445178 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 23 exp: 45157731 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.470 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445186 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 24 exp: 45157731 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.476 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445194 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 25 exp: 45157731 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.482 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445208 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 36 exp: 45157731 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $029-05-25 $t04:27:34.830 201C/01 $029-05-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01305006607 208@/01 $a29-05-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 49 exp: 45157731 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.488 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445216 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 54 exp: 45157731 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.500 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445232 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 108 exp: 45157731 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.512 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445259 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 204 exp: 45157731 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.519 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445267 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH lok: 45157731 205 exp: 45157731 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:16:16.524 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142445275 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/62850 $XH
