This proposition has been tested in the case of one of the most emblematic charismatic leaders in modern politics, Cuba's longtime revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. When he fell ill in 2006, conventional wisdom assumed a major crisis of succession to be inevitable. So how was it possible that the Cuban regime was able to stage a gradual and orderly succession? In addressing this question, the article identifies four key ways in which the empirical experience of the post-Fidel succession challenges our theoretical understanding of the link between charismatic authority and political leadership change lok: 45175313 3 exp: 45175313 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.622 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037441 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 5 exp: 45175313 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.631 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0114403745X 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 8 exp: 45175313 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.651 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037468 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 10 exp: 45175313 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.656 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037476 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 11 exp: 45175313 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.664 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037484 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 20 exp: 45175313 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.669 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037492 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 21 exp: 45175313 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.674 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037506 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 23 exp: 45175313 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.698 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037514 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 24 exp: 45175313 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.703 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037522 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 25 exp: 45175313 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.708 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037530 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 36 exp: 45175313 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $002-06-25 $t02:13:54.385 201C/01 $002-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01305069390 208@/01 $a02-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 49 exp: 45175313 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.713 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037549 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 54 exp: 45175313 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.724 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037565 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 108 exp: 45175313 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.755 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037581 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 204 exp: 45175313 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.761 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0114403759X 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH lok: 45175313 205 exp: 45175313 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $025-02-21 $t23:01:49.767 201C/01 $025-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01144037603 208@/01 $a25-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/36913 $XH
