Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge nehmen Kontakte mittel- und westeuropäischer Mächte zu ihren östlichen Nachbarn in den Blick, um das Potenzial und die Grenzen symbolischer Kommunikation im interkulturellen diplomatischen Austausch auszuloten. In den Beziehungen zum Moskowitischen und zum Osmanischen Reich lässt sich zwar beobachten, dass sich die Sprache der Rituale im Kulturkontakt der Vormoderne insofern als lingua franca erwies, als bestimmte Zeichen nahezu universell verständlich waren. Im Detail gab es jedoch unzählige regionale Varianten der weitgehend arbiträren symbolischen Zeichen. Die Zeremonialsprache der europäischen Fürstengesellschaft war in diesem Sinne nur ein Dialekt unter vielen. Rituale boten daher nicht nur die Chance interkultureller Kommunikation, sondern sie gaben ebenfalls reichlich Anlass zu Missverständnissen. / »Pre-Modern Ritual Practice in Intercultural Settings« -- The pre-modern society of princes was shaped and constituted by a common language of signs, gestures, and rituals.
