It was dedicated to the Doge of Venice and his counsellors, who are labelled "lovers of Truth." The author of the book was a certain Simone (Simḥa) Luzzatto, a native of Venice, where he lived and died, serving as rabbi for over fifty years during the course of the seventeenth century.Luzzatto's political thesis is simple and, at the same time, temerarious, if not revolutionary: Venice can put an end to its political decline, he argues, by offering the Jews a monopoly on overseas commercial activity. This plan is highly recommendable because the Jews are "wellsuited for trade," much more so than others (such as "foreigners," for example). The rabbi opens his argument by recalling that trade and usury are the only occupations permitted to Jews. Within the confines of their historical situation, the Venetian Jews became particularly skilled at trade with partners from the Eastern Mediterranean countries. Luzzatto's argument is that this talent could be put at the service of the Venetian government in order to maintain - or, more accurately, recover - its political importance as an intermediary between East and West. He was the first to define the role of the Jews on the basis of their economic and social functions, disregarding the classic categorisation of Judaism's alleged privileged religious status in world history.Nonetheless, going beyond the socio-economic arguments of the book, it is essential to point out Luzzatto's resort to sceptical strategies in order to plead in defence of the Venetian Jews. It is precisely his philosophical and political scepticism that makes Luzzatto's texts so unique.This edition aims to grant access to his works and thought to English-speaking readers and scholars. By approaching his texts from this point of view, the editors hope to open a new path in research into Jewish culture and philosophy that will enable other scholars to develop new directions and new perspectives, stressing the interpenetration between Jews and the surrounding Christian and secular cultures. lok: 46001348 3 101B $003-03-20 $t15:27:12.000 101C $003-03-20 101U $0utf8 145S/01 $a770 145Z/01 $a900 T 234 Da 0054 exp: 46001348 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $020-02-20 $t18:18:39.088 201C/01 $020-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0108333803X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a20-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 5 exp: 46001348 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $016-04-20 $t16:18:22.000 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083924257 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 6 exp: 46001348 6 1 #EPN 201B/01 $016-04-20 $t16:18:25.000 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083924265 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 8 exp: 46001348 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $020-02-20 $t18:18:39.103 201C/01 $020-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083338048 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a20-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 10 exp: 46001348 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $020-02-20 $t18:18:39.127 201C/01 $020-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083338056 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a20-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 11 exp: 46001348 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $022-02-20 $t22:22:41.934 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083924273 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 13 exp: 46001348 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $022-02-20 $t22:22:41.950 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083924281 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 20 exp: 46001348 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $020-02-20 $t18:18:39.142 201C/01 $020-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083338064 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a20-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 21 exp: 46001348 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $020-02-20 $t18:18:39.159 201C/01 $020-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083338072 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a20-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 23 exp: 46001348 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $020-02-20 $t18:18:39.187 201C/01 $020-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083338080 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a20-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 24 exp: 46001348 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $022-02-20 $t22:22:41.962 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0108392429X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 25 exp: 46001348 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $020-02-20 $t18:18:39.209 201C/01 $020-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083338099 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a20-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 36 exp: 46001348 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $011-10-24 $t23:52:13.283 201C/01 $011-10-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01277250502 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a11-10-24 $bl lok: 46001348 49 exp: 46001348 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $022-02-20 $t22:22:41.978 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083924303 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 51 exp: 46001348 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $022-02-20 $t22:22:42.010 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0108392432X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 54 exp: 46001348 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $022-02-20 $t22:22:42.023 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083924338 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 69 exp: 46001348 69 1 #EPN 201B/01 $016-04-20 $t16:18:27.000 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083924354 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 74 exp: 46001348 74 1 #EPN 201B/01 $011-10-24 $t23:52:13.286 201C/01 $011-10-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01277250510 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a11-10-24 $bl lok: 46001348 75 exp: 46001348 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $022-02-20 $t22:22:42.074 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083924362 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 107 exp: 46001348 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $022-02-20 $t22:22:42.094 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083924370 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 108 exp: 46001348 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $022-02-20 $t22:22:42.106 201C/01 $022-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083924389 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a22-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 204 exp: 46001348 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $020-02-20 $t18:18:39.235 201C/01 $020-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083338102 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a20-02-20 $bl lok: 46001348 205 exp: 46001348 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $020-02-20 $t18:18:39.251 201C/01 $020-02-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01083338110 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110527988 $S0 208@/01 $a20-02-20 $bl
