While depicting the segregated city before World War II, Absher traces the migration of black musicians, both men and women and both classical and vernacular performers, from the American South to Chicago during the 1930s to 1950s. Absher takes the history beyond the study of jazz and blues by examining the significant role that classically trained black musicians played in building the Chicago South Side community. By acknowledging the presence and importance of classical musicians, Absher argues that black migrants in Chicago had diverse education and economic backgrounds but found common cause in the city's music community. lok: 46049111 3 exp: 46049111 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:51:43.991 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085098931 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 5 exp: 46049111 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-22 $t18:31:02.745 201C/01 $018-02-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01183035888 208@/01 $a18-02-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 8 exp: 46049111 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:51:44.011 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0108509894X 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 10 exp: 46049111 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:51:44.025 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085098958 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 11 exp: 46049111 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:40:38.949 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0129446888X 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 13 exp: 46049111 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:40:38.953 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294468898 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 21 exp: 46049111 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:51:44.055 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085098974 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 23 exp: 46049111 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:51:44.067 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085098982 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 24 exp: 46049111 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:40:38.956 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294468901 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 25 exp: 46049111 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:51:44.087 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085098990 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 51 exp: 46049111 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:40:38.958 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0129446891X 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 76 exp: 46049111 76 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:40:38.964 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294468936 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 77 exp: 46049111 77 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:40:38.966 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294468944 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 107 exp: 46049111 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:40:38.969 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294468952 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 204 exp: 46049111 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:51:44.107 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085099008 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH lok: 46049111 205 exp: 46049111 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:51:44.127 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085099016 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znzb4 $XH
