Bessels recounts the expedition of the ship Polaris, led by Captain Charles Francis Hall, on its failed attempt to reach the North Pole. Bessels, Polaris's chief scientist, provides a thorough account of the voyage, including detailed descriptions of St. John's, Newfoundland, Greenland settlements, Inuit people and culture, and plentiful scientific data on the flora, fauna, geography, oceans they encountered. Recent discoveries concerning a more sinister aspect of the voyage also make this a vital critical edition. While wintering at Thank God Harbour in Northwest Greenland, Hall died suddenly; Bessels proclaimed the cause of death was stroke. In 1968 English professor Chauncy Loomis and pathologist Franklin Paddock exhumed Hall's body from the permafrost, discovering that Hall had in fact been poisoned with arsenic. Bessels had the knowledge and opportunity to poison Hall, but for decades no motive could be found. However, new evidence has emerged of a romantic triangle between Hall, Bessels, and a young American sculptor Vinnie Ream, providing, at last, a motive for murder. Barr's introduction and epilogue outline the unique aspects of Bessels book, placing it in the historical context of arctic exploration. Barr has added 723 endnotes, drawing on 73 bibliographic sources, to explain and to contextualize Bessels writing. Barr's appendices cover Bessel's scientific appendix, Hall's instructions, the Board of Inquiry that followed the expedition's return, and biographies of the seven major players in this tale of exploration and murder."--... lok: 46049723 3 exp: 46049723 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:54:00.735 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085155552 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 5 exp: 46049723 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-22 $t18:15:40.850 201C/01 $018-02-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01182909787 208@/01 $a18-02-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 8 exp: 46049723 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:54:00.754 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085155560 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 10 exp: 46049723 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:54:00.794 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085155579 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 11 exp: 46049723 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-12-21 $t23:06:45.377 201C/01 $007-12-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01174282010 208@/01 $a07-12-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 21 exp: 46049723 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:54:00.850 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085155595 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 23 exp: 46049723 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:54:00.866 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085155609 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 24 exp: 46049723 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-12-21 $t23:06:45.386 201C/01 $007-12-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01174282029 208@/01 $a07-12-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 25 exp: 46049723 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:54:00.882 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085155617 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 36 exp: 46049723 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-12-21 $t23:06:45.389 201C/01 $007-12-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01174282037 208@/01 $a07-12-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 72 exp: 46049723 72 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-12-21 $t23:06:45.397 201C/01 $007-12-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01174282061 208@/01 $a07-12-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 107 exp: 46049723 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-12-21 $t23:06:45.399 201C/01 $007-12-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0117428207X 208@/01 $a07-12-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 108 exp: 46049723 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-12-21 $t23:06:45.402 201C/01 $007-12-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01174282088 208@/01 $a07-12-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 204 exp: 46049723 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:54:00.917 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085155625 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH lok: 46049723 205 exp: 46049723 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-20 $t22:54:00.937 201C/01 $004-03-20 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01085155633 208@/01 $a04-03-20 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv5rf6g4 $XH
