The thirteen contributions gathered in this volume explore how bankers and banks were involved in the political, economic and cultural life of Europe. They focus on the geographical and socio-political characteristics and regional experiences of the Northeast European regions. Case studies close to the source will highlight the dynamic development and international dimension of banking as well as the strategies and instruments of self-representation of bankers and banks. They are stories of political and social integration, but also of conflict. Thus, the studies, which cover a wide range of topics from the early modern period to the Cold War of the 20th century, repeatedly stimulate cross-references and new perspectives.
