Roman Dmowski (1864-1939) is regarded as the greatest theoretician of the conservative Polish nationalist movement. A social darwinist, he tried to convince his fellow countrymen in partitioned Poland that they should give up their martyrological approach to history and fight for their interests. As the greatest adversaries of the Polish nation he regarded Germany, the Freemasons and the Jews. When after the first world war his greatest personal enemy, the socialist Jozef Pilsudski, got an overwhelming influence in Poland, Dmowski retreated from policy and in his later writings developed sympathies for European fascism.
