It reveals the technical ingenuity that water heritage has always inspired, and it presents the challenges that this heritage faces, along with possible solutions. Reflecting the depth of cooperation between UNESCO and ICOMOS, this book was launched … as a showcase of cooperation to increase dialogue on water heritage. – Irina Bokova (Director-General of UNESCO) Water is vital for life, and its availability has been a concern for mankind throughout the ages. Its presence has always been ascertained in a variety of ways and the development of human society everywhere is connected with various forms of water management. Man also needed to manage water to find protection from its dangers and the need for that is increasing. In the coming decades, the impact of climate change is expected to intensify floods and droughts, affect groundwater resources, raise sea levels, increase pollution and enhance the frequency and magnitude of disasters. Societies around the world are challenged to adapt to these threats to ensure water security, economic prosperity and environmental and cultural sustainability. This book deals with the heritage of water management and the use that was made of water, as well as the impact of water management on heritage. An example of the former may be an ancient irrigation system in the Philippines or in the Middle East that still functions today, while the latter may reflect the importance of maintaining groundwater levels for the preservation of organic remains on archaeological sites or of wooden piles underneath standing buildings. In either case the papers in this book reflect the dynamic nature of water, and hence the equally dynamic relation between water management and heritage. This publication follows up on a Heritage and Water conference in Amsterdam, the first of its kind. Its main purpose is to credibly present the importance and value of heritage and historical experience for water and sustainable development, and vice versa, present the importance of water management for the protection of heritage. It presents evolving insights and concepts about Water and about Heritage from a variety of disciplines, policy and public perspectives illustrated with cases studies and aims to connect decision makers with experts such as engineers, archaeologists, historians, geographers, ecologist and landscape architects. lok: 48313322 3 exp: 48313322 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.255 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0116313967X 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 5 exp: 48313322 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.262 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139688 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 8 exp: 48313322 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.268 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139696 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 10 exp: 48313322 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.274 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0116313970X 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 11 exp: 48313322 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.279 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139718 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 13 exp: 48313322 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.286 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139726 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 21 exp: 48313322 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.298 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139742 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 23 exp: 48313322 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.304 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139750 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 24 exp: 48313322 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.310 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139769 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 25 exp: 48313322 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.316 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139777 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 36 exp: 48313322 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.322 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139785 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 51 exp: 48313322 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.334 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139807 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 59 exp: 48313322 59 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.346 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139823 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 75 exp: 48313322 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.357 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0116313984X 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 107 exp: 48313322 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.365 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139858 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 108 exp: 48313322 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.371 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139866 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 204 exp: 48313322 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.377 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139874 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH lok: 48313322 205 exp: 48313322 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:13.383 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163139882 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/45790 $XH
