In addition, the growing influence of the Trump administration has destabilized the transatlantic security community, compelling Europe—especially the European Union—to rethink its relations with Russia. The volume editors’ primary goal is to illuminate the nature of the deteriorating security relationship between Europe and Russia, and the key implications for its future. While the book is timely, the editors and contributors also draw out long-term lessons from this era of diplomatic degeneration to show how increasing cooperation between two regions can devolve into rapidly escalating conflict. While it is possible that the relationship between Russia and Europe can ultimately be restored, it is also necessary to understand why it was undermined in the first place. The fact that these transformations occur under the backdrop of an uncertain transatlantic relationship makes this investigation all the more pressing. Each chapter in this volume addresses three dimensions of the problem: first, how and why the power status quo that had existed since the end of the Cold War has changed in recent years, as evidenced by Russia’s newly aggressive posturing; second, the extent to which the EU’s power has been enabled or constrained in light of Russia’s actions; and third, the risks entailed in Europe’s reactive power—that is, the tendency to act after-the-fact instead of proactively toward Russia—in light of the transatlantic divide under Trump. lok: 48313345 3 exp: 48313345 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.576 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143782 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 5 exp: 48313345 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.583 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143790 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 8 exp: 48313345 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.588 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143804 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 10 exp: 48313345 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.594 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143812 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 11 exp: 48313345 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.603 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143820 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 20 exp: 48313345 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.609 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143839 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 21 exp: 48313345 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.615 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143847 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 23 exp: 48313345 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.621 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143855 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 24 exp: 48313345 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.627 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143863 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 25 exp: 48313345 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.633 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143871 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 36 exp: 48313345 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.639 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0116314388X 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 49 exp: 48313345 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.645 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143898 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 54 exp: 48313345 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.657 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0116314391X 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 108 exp: 48313345 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.669 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143936 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 204 exp: 48313345 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.675 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143944 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH lok: 48313345 205 exp: 48313345 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-08-21 $t23:28:16.681 201C/01 $004-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01163143952 208@/01 $a04-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/47500 $XH
