Diverse bottom-up actors and organizations that attempt to practice and institute more sustainable and just relations, in turn, have to tackle unfavorable conditions and generally lack the resources to take full effect. This paper critically discusses the role of strategy and compromise in facing this cycle of institutional inertia and lack of bottom-up agency. To illustrate its argument, the paper draws on an ethnographic case study on community-led initiatives in Stuttgart (Germany). It traces the ways in which a particular arrangement—an “open workshop”—supports individuals and organizations in their engagement in sustainability-oriented activities while substantiating ethically and socially ambiguous practices. Building on these empirical insights, the paper develops a notion of strategy that revolves around the reflective construction of hybrid but transformative infrastructures to strike a balance between ethical congruency and transformative pragmatism lok: 48323753 3 exp: 48323753 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.798 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039237 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 5 exp: 48323753 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.803 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039245 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 8 exp: 48323753 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.812 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039253 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 10 exp: 48323753 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.818 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039261 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 11 exp: 48323753 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.824 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0116403927X 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 20 exp: 48323753 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.850 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039288 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 21 exp: 48323753 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.855 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039296 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 23 exp: 48323753 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.861 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0116403930X 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 24 exp: 48323753 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.866 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039318 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 25 exp: 48323753 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.870 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039326 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 36 exp: 48323753 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.876 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039334 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 49 exp: 48323753 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.880 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039342 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 54 exp: 48323753 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.890 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039369 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 72 exp: 48323753 72 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.900 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039385 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 108 exp: 48323753 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.904 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039393 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 204 exp: 48323753 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.909 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039407 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH lok: 48323753 205 exp: 48323753 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-08-21 $t23:00:45.914 201C/01 $006-08-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01164039415 208@/01 $a06-08-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/218777 $XH
